Homework: Getting Started

You know you have to start your homework. You really do want to get it done. You were going to start as soon as you got home from school. You tell yourself you need a break and you'll do it after dinner. Dinner is over, and you still can't get started. So what's the problem?

As a student with ADD, you know you have a problem with procrastination. You've also been told that one way to beat procrastination is to break things down into small segments. But what exactly does that mean, and how small is small? You may have even made a list of what subjects and in what order you plan to do them, in an attempt to break it down into a way you could manage it. Meanwhile, you are still watching television, unable to begin. You may not have realized that the "getting ready" part of your homework is the first part of the process. Here are some tips to help you get into action.

1. Locate your backpack. Is it still in the car? Did you drop it by the door when you came in your house or dorm?

2. Pick up your backpack and take it to where you will be doing your homework.

3. Open the backpack and take out your list of assignments (which is, of course, written down). Just exactly what is it you have to do? Make a decision what you will do first. If it's to read a chapter, or answer questions in a book, open the book to the page where you will begin.

4 Will you need to take notes as you read the chapter? Do you have pen or pencil and a notebook or notepad ready? Will you be taking notes on the computer? Turn the computer on, and open a blank word document. Put the book next to the computer. Make sure you have everything you need.

5. Now that you are totally prepared to begin, take a 5 minute break. Set a timer (there are some timers you can clip on your clothes). When the break is over, it's easy to start your homework, because all of the little details have been taken care of.
